Letter from the Editors
To the Harrison High School Community,
We are living in ever-changing times. Everywhere we look, there are news stories about war, climate change, racism, political division, among other social issues. These days, it can be very difficult to read these news articles detailing the faults in our world, illuminating how we are letting one another down. We live in the information age, but also the misinformation age. Fake news is sprinkled into the internet, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell apart the truth from the lies. Sometimes, it is more comfortable, easier, to stay uninformed.
However, we cannot forget that journalism is a tool. It can be used to hurt people, to divide, to separate, when lies are passed on as truths. But in its core, journalism is salient to unity. Journalism is how we stay connected; how we learn about those different from us; how the silent find their voice. Journalism can give hope.
In the Husky Herald, we hope to strengthen our school spirit. We aim to inform on school events and school successes. With our school newspaper, we can learn more about one another and about ourselves. Our goal is to show you how amazingly diverse Harrison High School is. We hope to show you our athletes, our performers, our artists, our musicians. This year, we are lucky to have many wonderful members who care about a myriad of different things.
The fact that our newspaper is now online gives us so much freedom. We can now truly relay real-time news, and frequently update the website. It allows you to interact with articles in ways that paper copies could not.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without those who came before me. Jack Kelly and Luke Wong were the ones who were able to get our site online, and I have much to thank them for. I’m grateful for everyone who came before me and laid such strong foundations in the Herald. Our newspaper is made up of persevering, resourceful, and passionate journalists. I can’t wait to see what the rest of this year holds.
Sincerely yours,
Zoe Coric
